Emergency relief — how to help
Neither Australia Yearly Meeting nor its service agency Quaker Service Australia has the resources to assist in emergencies. Instead, we recommend that Friends who wish to donate money towards emergency relief visit the website of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) http://www.acfid.asn.au. The website will assist Friends to find an ACFID-accredited agency which is already working in the country where the crisis has occurred.
Who We Are And What We Believe
The Religious Society of Friends began in Britain in the 17th century with the teachings of George Fox, an itinerant preacher, and has spread to most regions in the world. There are half a million Quakers worldwide , most in Africa; in Australia, we have around 2000 people who worship in Meetings for Worship , of whom 1000 are in membership.
Austraiian Quakers have reflected on their faith, practice, life stages, challenges and history in 'This we can say; Australian Quaker life, faith an thought' . To read these reflections, click here.
Quakers and Social Issues
…we must accept responsibility for what is happening in our lives and in the world. We must liberate ourselves from old ways of thinking. We must be part of the community debate about domestic violence and rape, the deeds of minorities, and conflict resolution. (David Purnell, 1994, in ' This we can say; Australian Quaker Life, Faith and Thought ', AYM 2003.)
