Yearly Meeting 2010 — Adelaide

Location

Yearly Meeting 2010 will be held from 2-9 January at Westminster School, Marion, SA. Marion is a south western suburb of Adelaide, a short distance from the airport and well served by train and bus from the city. The school grounds are expansive and park-like with no hills and few stairs. Friends are advised to purchase a copy of Documents in Advance from your Meeting and bring with you to Yearly Meeting, as this provides advice for First Timers at Yearly Meeting, the timetable for the week, plus background information on all the issues that will be discussed at Yearly Meeting.

Accommodation

There is some accommodation available on site.  This is mainly single and twin rooms, some in a large residential block and some in 3-bedroom units. The campus is large and the units are situated some distance (over level ground) from the main meeting rooms; the large block is more central. No self-catering facilities are available on site. On-site accommodation is limited to 134, but a range of other options – caravan parks, motel, hotels and apartments - have been identified within easy travelling distance of Westminster and information about these is available on the AYM web site.  As the demand for on site accommodation may be greater than the supply, we have decided to give priority to: AYM officers and invited guests, Young Friends, those with mobility needs, and families. We will have a cut-off date of 30 November after which the priority places will be allocated.  Because places are limited, belonging to a priority group will not necessarily guarantee an on-site bed. If there are  extra available places, they  will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

Meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be available at Westminster for residents and others.  Vegetarian meals (and other dietary requirements by negotiation) will be included.  A barista will be available in the dining room most of the time, so good coffee will be available on a user pay basis ($2.50 per cup).

Children and Junior Young Friends

Special programs will be provided for children and Junior Young Friends, the JYF program running from Monday morning until Friday lunchtime, including a camp from Tuesday morning until Friday lunchtime.  These programs will all be provided without charge to the families.

Summer School

The various Summer School groups will have the opportunity to share their insights, artefacts and other outcomes at a Summer School Fair to be held later in the week. For those seeking some respite from the demands of YM, we will be providing a quiet room with associated nurturing experiences.

Documents for Yearly Meeting

Documents in Advance are available to download from this website by logging into the Members' page. We encourage Friends to print their own and bring them, but there will be printed copies available for purchase from your Local Meeting — ask your clerk or correspondent.

Computer access during Yearly Meeting

A computer suite with internet access will be available for our use at Westminster. The cost for this will be included in the registration fee.

Backhouse Lecture

The Backhouse Lecture is to be given by Young Friends who have been collaborating Australia-wide in the endeavour. It is likely to be a unique and inspiring experience.

YM Bags

While Canberra had a BYO policy in relation to YM bags, we have been holding a Meeting for Bagging each month where a small sewing circle has been making, with love and odds and ends of fabric, an amazing assortment of bags for those attending YM2010.

Registration

The registration process will be a further development of the system used for YM 2008. It is hoped that this can become an integral part of future YMs. The process will be electronic with clear links provided on the AYM web site.

To register go to Calendar of Events, January 2010, for full details.

Share and Tell sessions allow Freinds to share their concerns and passions. To book a Share and Tell Session, contact Caroline Donald 0438 817 649.

Bookshop

Quaker Books will again be highlighted at YM2010. In addition to AYM publications including the Backhouse Lecture by Young Friends, there will be second hand books on the QSA stall, and 'Quakerly' publications available courtesy of the Pauline (Catholic) Bookshop.

Indigenous Welcome

We are negotiating with local Kaurna elders to devise a 'connecting on country' session to be held on the SATURDAY night, to incorporate elements of both Quaker and Kaurna ways. Adelaide Friend, composer and didgeridoo player, Peter Webb, is composing a piece of music to be part of that session. Peter is composing another piece, based around the testimonies, to be performed at the end of YM. The inaugural gathering of Deb Munro’s World Children’s Choir for Peace will be held in Adelaide at the same time as YM2010 and the choir will perform at Westminster prior to the usual YM concert.

World Children's Choir for Peace

The inaugural gathering of Deb Munro’s World Children’s Choir for Peace will be held in Adelaide at the same time as YM2010 at another site. The choir will perform at Westminster prior to the usual YM concert.

Alternatives to Violence Project National Gathering

The Alternatives to Violence Project National Gathering will be in Adelaide immediately following the YM from Saturday evening 9th January to Monday afternoon 11th January. The venue will be close to the city and accommodation will be available. Please contact Sabine Erika or phone 0247878784 for bookings and further information.

First Timers

If this is your first time at a Yearly Meeting, there is a briefing on Saturday, 2 January from 5:00–6.00 pm, and a catch up dinner on Wednesday evening during the week. Pastoral Carers are available during the week should you feel overwhelmed by the business and pressure of the week. Do take time to rest and some time out — don't try to attend everything as it will all get too much.

  Offsite accommodation

The Planning Committee for Yearly Meeting 2010 advises that those who wish to live off site need to book early, and provide the following options for off site accommodation:

Information of prices are current as of 15th April 2009 though some of the tarifs will have gone up a bit by the time people book. These are competitive prices and only the start of the sort of local accommodation that will be available. I think that it is some of the best as far as location and price goes.
